The Langley RCMP announced the arrest of a suspect in the U.S. and formal charges in connection with an extortion case that dates back to 2024, following a collaborative investigation with the FBI.
The case began when a Langley resident reported receiving threatening phone calls from an unknown number on May 27, 2024. After an extensive investigation by the RCMP, a suspect named Jasmeet Singh was identified.
Upon establishing that Singh was residing in Fresno, Calif., Canadian authorities reached out to the FBI and an RCMP Liaison Officer in San Francisco to coordinate efforts.
Through joint cooperation and sharing of evidence across borders and agencies, the investigation progressed significantly, leading to the decision for the FBI to pursue charges in their jurisdiction.
Sgt. Zynal Sharoom of the Langley RCMP emphasized the intricate and time-consuming nature of such investigations, highlighting the need for various legal processes and international collaboration between law enforcement agencies. The FBI now holds Singh in custody awaiting trial, where he could potentially face up to five years in prison and a hefty fine if found guilty.
The extortion threats, which have targeted Canada’s South Asian community, are believed to have ties to the Lawrence Bishnoi crime group based in India.
