Police Chief Reveals: Jewish Community Faces Highest Rate of Hate Incidents in York Region Since 2024

York Regional Police Chief Jim MacSween is taking strong measures to ensure the safety of Jewish residents, the most targeted group for hate crimes in the area over the past two years. While anti-Semitic incidents have been on the rise since 2023, MacSween reported that progress is being made.

Recent data from the York Regional Police indicates a significant decrease in hate crimes relating to religion by over 45% year-over-year. Incidents linked to sexual orientation have decreased by 46%, but crimes driven by race and ethnicity persist in their upward trend.

In 2025, out of 57 hate crimes targeting religious groups, 43 were directed towards the Jewish community. Although this number has decreased from the previous year, it remains the highest among targeted groups.

Chief MacSween informed CityNews that they have expanded their hate crime unit and approach every investigation from the perspective of hate crimes. This initiative has resulted in a 35% increase in charges against individuals spreading hate in the community, regardless of the target.

During the holiday season, particularly Hanukkah, York Regional Police have deployed additional resources to ensure the safety of attendees at every event. Visible presence is seen as a crucial aspect of crime prevention, as emphasized by MacSween, who assured that the police force will be present and vigilant at all events to protect the community.

Following the tragic incident at Bondi Beach in Sydney, where 15 people were killed during a Hanukkah celebration, concerns have heightened among the Jewish community. MacSween emphasized the importance of creating a safe environment and expressed solidarity with those feeling unsafe.

Toronto has also witnessed a notable decrease in hate crimes this year. However, Toronto police highlight that these incidents remain a serious concern, with many going unreported.

Clayton Campbell, president of the Toronto Police Association, stated that all hands are on deck to ensure the safety of people gathering for the holidays. Increased visible police presence at places of worship, schools, and events, along with the diligent efforts of intelligence services, are part of the proactive measures being taken to address these issues.
