“Breakthrough Deal Sealed: Hydro-Québec Strikes Agreement with 5,500-Strong Union”

Hydro-Québec and the second-largest union, representing specialists and professionals, have come to a preliminary agreement. The union branch, part of the Canadian Union of Public Employees (CUPE) and affiliated with the FTQ, consists of 5,500 members employed by the Crown corporation.

According to CUPE, the tentative agreement will soon be presented to its members in general meetings. The specifics of the agreement have not been disclosed, as the union prioritizes informing its members first, a common practice in such negotiations.

In response to the union members’ pressure, which included a refusal to work overtime, the union has announced the immediate discontinuation of this tactic.

The previous collective agreement had expired in December 2024, leading to a dispute primarily focused on subcontracting. The union advocated for keeping expertise in-house to safeguard jobs, while Hydro-Québec emphasized the need for flexibility in responding to evolving circumstances.
