A non-profit organization in Montreal’s West Island is fighting food insecurity through their Winter Basket initiative.
Corbeille de Pain’s Winter Basket initiative runs from December to April, aiming to support local farmers and community members facing food insecurity on Montreal’s West Island. Emma McLaughlin, the organization’s marketing manager, mentions that they collaborate with four different farms for the winter baskets, offering small or large baskets filled with fresh, local, and organic vegetables like cabbage, carrots, beets, and potatoes. Customers can opt for weekly or monthly delivery subscriptions.
For those unable to afford a basket, subsidized options are available at half price, funded by regular basket purchases. This model enables community support within the initiative.
McLaughlin highlights the misconception that the West Island is affluent, emphasizing the diverse population and significant food insecurity within the area. Employees and volunteers gather at Les Jardins Carya every Thursday to pack baskets with recipes and deliver them across the West Island at no additional cost.
Feedback since the launch has been positive, with many recipients expressing satisfaction with the quantity and quality of the food received.
