After spending 33 years in prison for four murders, a Quebec man, Daniel Jolivet, has been granted bail following concerns about the fairness of his trial. Jolivet’s case is now under scrutiny by a federal panel to determine if a miscarriage of justice occurred. Quebec Superior Court Justice Lyne Décarie announced today at the Montreal courthouse that Jolivet will be released from prison while the review is ongoing.
Jolivet, aged 68, was convicted of two counts of first-degree murder and two counts of second-degree murder in Brossard, Quebec, back in 1994. Earlier this year, the Crown informed Jolivet’s lawyer that there were valid reasons to believe he did not receive a fair trial. Subsequently, in October, the federal government revealed its suspicions of a potential miscarriage of justice in the case, prompting an investigation by the Justice Department’s criminal conviction review group.
