“Stay Safe This Holiday Season: Expert Tips from BCAA and BCHP for Navigating B.C. Roads”

As the holiday season approaches, winter driving can be perilous on British Columbia’s roads. Local authorities offer crucial advice on how to navigate the hazards and stay safe.

Daniel Quigley, the senior manager of BCAA’s road assistance fleet, gears up for a busy period ahead. He highlighted the surge in calls for assistance during extreme weather conditions last winter, emphasizing the importance of being prepared.

Quigley recommended key precautions such as using high-grade ice windshield washer fluid, maintaining windshield wipers regularly, and ensuring vehicles are equipped with quality winter tires. While winter tires are mandatory on most highways, having appropriate tread for city driving is equally vital.

Corporal Michael McLaughlin from the BC Highway Patrol cautioned drivers against complacency, emphasizing the challenges of stopping on slippery roads. He stressed the spike in speed-related crashes in December and urged motorists to adjust their driving behavior accordingly.

With changing road conditions and an increase in serious accidents, both Quigley and McLaughlin advised drivers to slow down, stay vigilant, and prepare for emergencies. Carrying an emergency kit with essentials like extra clothing, food, water, and a travel shovel is recommended, especially for trips to higher elevations.

As Environment and Climate Change Canada issues a snowfall warning of up to 40 centimeters on the Coquihalla Highway, it’s clear that being cautious and well-prepared is crucial for safe winter travel.
