After the recent flooding in the Fraser Valley due to a series of storms, insurers are now processing claims for affected homeowners and farmers. The Insurance Corporation of British Columbia (ICBC) has received 35 vehicle claims related to flood damage, primarily from Abbotsford, Chilliwack, and Hope.
According to spokesperson Greg Harper, the number of claims may increase as residents assess the extent of the damage to their vehicles. ICBC has a dedicated claims team to assist impacted customers, who can report flood-related vehicle damage online at icbc.com or by calling 1-800-910-4222.
Harper emphasizes the importance of understanding insurance coverage, particularly in flood-prone areas. He advises drivers to review their policies and consult with an Autoplan broker if unsure about their coverage to ensure protection in case of a flood.
This flooding incident follows the historic 2021 floods in the region, underscoring the need for preparation and risk awareness. While each weather event is unique, Harper stresses the significance of planning ahead for worst-case scenarios to safeguard against potential damages.
In Abbotsford, all flood-related evacuation alerts and orders have been lifted. To aid residents in the recovery process, the city council has approved temporary measures, including waiving specific building fees and expediting permits for the next 12 months.
As assessments progress and more information emerges, ICBC promises to provide updates for customers and the general public.
