“Chaos in Old Montreal: Water Main Break Shuts Down Viger Avenue, Disrupts Daily Commute”

A water main break disrupted traffic on Viger Avenue in historic Old Montreal, right outside the Palais des congrès building, on a busy Monday afternoon.

According to officials from the City of Montreal, the incident, which occurred close to 2:50 p.m. near Jeanne-Mance Street on the south side of Viger Avenue, prompted a swift response.

City spokesperson Philippe Sabourin noted that quick actions were taken by crews to manage the situation by reducing water pressure and containing the flow. Fortunately, no residents or businesses faced water shortages as a result.

Following the water main break, Viger Avenue had to be temporarily closed off. Plans were in place to reopen one lane to traffic by 6 p.m. on the same day.

Repair work is scheduled to commence on Thursday morning, leading to further closures on Viger Avenue near Jeanne-Mance during the repair process. The damaged pipe in question is a 12-inch aqueduct.

The disruption also led to street closures in the vicinity, with Montreal police implementing traffic diversions on Viger between René-Lévesque Boulevard and Jeanne-Mance, as well as on St-Laurent Boulevard between Viger and St-Urbain Street.

By 5:40 p.m., police officers were already on the scene, anticipating the reopening of the affected area within approximately 30 minutes.
