Child Wounded in Crossfire During Police Shootout in Northern Quebec, Mayor Confirms

The mayor of a village in Quebec’s Far North revealed that a six-year-old girl and another individual were injured during a gunfire exchange involving the Nunavik Police Service.

Inukjuak Mayor Bobby Epoo shared that the young girl was airlifted to a Montreal hospital for treatment following the incident. However, no further details on her condition were provided.

According to Quebec’s police watchdog, the Nunavik officers engaged in a shooting incident with an individual outside a residence in the community around 3:30 a.m. on Dec. 20. The police were responding to a call concerning a person believed to be a threat to others.

The Bureau des enquêtes indépendantes reported that the individual involved in the confrontation was injured and subsequently arrested. Additionally, another person was discovered seriously injured inside the home.

As per the watchdog’s statement, the arrested individual was in stable condition, while the person found indoors was in critical condition as of the latest update on Sunday.

Despite inquiries, the BEI did not provide further information about the shooting, including whether the injuries sustained were from police gunfire.

The Crown prosecutor’s office has confirmed that a 35-year-old has been charged with illegal possession of a firearm in relation to the incident.
