“HWY 3 Could Swing Open Its Lanes by Boxing Day, Ministry Announces”

A section of Highway 3, located about 42 kilometers east of the Highway 3/5 junction, was recently closed due to heavy rain causing a 50-meter stretch to be washed away on December 16. The Ministry of Transportation and Transit now anticipates reopening the affected area as early as Boxing Day, with New Year’s Day being the latest expected reopening date. Initially estimated to take weeks for repairs, progress has been quicker than expected, requiring less construction work and no need for utility relocations. Longer-term repairs will involve significant design and reconstruction efforts.

In addition to this damaged section, other parts of Highway 3 were also affected by recent flooding and slides, leading to a closure between Hope and Princeton on December 10. The Ministry announced that repairs at all other impacted sites on Highway 3, except for paving, will be completed by Monday, December 22, 2025. However, the full reopening of the Highway 3 corridor will be dependent on the completion of the necessary detour.

Drivers traveling from the Lower Mainland to the Southern Interior are advised to seek alternate routes due to the ongoing closure of Highway 3. Expect increased traffic on highways 1 and 5, so exercise caution and allocate extra time for your journey.
