“Shriners Hospitals Marks a Century of Pioneering Care for Children in Canada”

Shriners Hospitals for Children Canada celebrates a remarkable milestone this year: a century of dedicated care for children with complex orthopedic and neuromuscular conditions. Established in 1925 in Montreal, the hospital’s mission began by assisting children affected by polio and other severe ailments, regardless of their financial situations. Over the decades, it has evolved into a renowned hub for orthopedic treatment, research, and innovation.

Gary McKeown, the chairman of the board of governors, reflected on the institution’s remarkable journey. Looking back on its founding in 1925, he praised the hospital’s resilience in providing essential care for a diverse range of diseases. The relocation to its current site beside McGill University Health Centre’s Glen Campus a decade ago marked another significant moment in its history.

McKeown highlighted the vital role of the Shriners organization in raising awareness and support for the hospital. Recognizing the public impact of the Shriners with their distinctive fezzes, he emphasized their contribution to the hospital’s visibility and outreach efforts.

The hospital’s commitment to research has led to pioneering advancements in treating rare bone disorders such as osteogenesis imperfecta. Acting hospital administrator Kelly Thorstad emphasized the institution’s focus on patient-centered care and continuous improvement to help children achieve their aspirations and lead fulfilling lives.

Thorstad showcased the hospital’s groundbreaking treatments, including the development of innovative protocols for osteogenesis imperfecta and mobility aids like the FASI Duval rod, enabling children to walk despite their condition. She emphasized the hospital’s ethos of compassion and generosity, fostering a supportive environment for patients and families.

Patient Charlotte Cau shared her positive experience at the hospital, highlighting the attentive care and reassurance provided by the staff during her scoliosis surgery. She praised the kindness and support of the hospital environment, describing it as a place where everyone is helpful and caring.

Looking ahead, the hospital remains dedicated to serving patients and families with a focus on innovation, research, and exceptional clinical care. Staff members are committed to upholding the institution’s legacy of compassionate service and medical excellence for years to come.
