“New Year’s Day in Toronto: Your Ultimate Guide to What’s Open and Closed!”

As the New Year kicks off, various businesses and services in Toronto will be affected by closures and adjusted hours following the festivities of New Year’s Eve.

On Wednesday, Jan. 1, banks, Canada Post offices, and government services in the city will be closed, as well as the Toronto Public Library.

However, many of Toronto’s popular attractions will remain open, including the CN Tower, Toronto Zoo, the Distillery District, and Ripley’s Aquarium.

For those planning to use public transportation, the TTC, GO Transit, and the UP Express will offer free services from 7 p.m. on Dec. 31 to 8 a.m. on Jan. 1, with additional services available to accommodate New Year’s Eve celebrants.

Following these free services, GO Transit will run on a Saturday schedule on Jan. 1, while the TTC will operate on a Sunday schedule.

LCBO and Beer stores will be closed on New Year’s Day, but select grocery stores will be open (check with individual stores for hours). St. Lawrence Market, however, will be closed.

Some Shoppers Drug Mart and Rexall locations will be open on New Year’s Day for those in need of pharmacy services.

Movie theatres will also be open on New Year’s Day, and select outdoor skating rinks may be available, weather permitting. For shopping, some malls will be open, but closures will occur at Sherway Gardens, Dufferin Mall, Scarborough Town Centre, Fairview Mall, Bayview Village, and Yorkdale Mall on Jan. 1.
