The City of Barrie has announced the cancellation of tonight’s New Year’s Eve celebration at Meridian Place due to severe weather conditions. Environment Canada has issued an Orange-level snow squall warning for Barrie, predicting heavy snowfall and near-zero visibility throughout the day and night, with a potential snow accumulation of 10 to 25 cm.
Citing concerns for public safety and the challenges posed by the winter weather for event preparations, the City of Barrie made the difficult decision to cancel the festivities. Kevin Datema, Director of Recreation & Culture Services, emphasized the importance of prioritizing safety for all involved, including attendees, staff, performers, and vendors.
The City plans to reschedule the performances by Kim Mitchell and the fireworks display as part of Winterfest on February 7-8, 2026.
