Vancouver to Skip New Year’s Eve Fireworks Show in 2025
Vancouver will bid farewell to 2025 without the traditional bang of fireworks on New Year’s Eve. The absence of a scheduled fireworks display in the downtown core has been a trend since the onset of the COVID-19 pandemic.
Ian Tostenson, the president of the BC Restaurant and Food Services Association, emphasizes the importance of hosting major events to draw people out to celebrate and support local businesses.
According to Tostenson, the lack of a large-scale event like fireworks dampens business activity, as these displays were integral to holiday festivities. He points out that events like the Christmas Market brought significant foot traffic downtown, resulting in bustling restaurants.
Tostenson notes that New Year’s Eve serves as a crucial period for restaurants before the quieter months of January and February. Over the past few years, there has been a noticeable shift towards more casual dining experiences for New Year celebrations, focusing on snack-style offerings and innovative cocktails to adapt to current economic conditions.
In light of the continued absence of fireworks shows, Tostenson raises the idea of the restaurant industry potentially organizing alternative events to attract patrons.
Addressing concerns about the cost of celebrating, Tostenson encourages individuals to enjoy themselves responsibly while highlighting that dining out doesn’t have to break the bank. He suggests opting for affordable options like sharing appetizers and plates or enjoying a glass of wine at a restaurant.
Despite the lack of permit applications for fireworks events, the City of Vancouver has confirmed that no fireworks display is planned for New Year’s Eve.
