The British Columbia Conservative Party is gearing up for a leadership shakeup as they announce the formation of a committee tasked with overseeing the selection of a new leader.
Scott Lamb, the committee’s chair, emphasized the urgent need for fresh leadership in the province to steer it in the right direction. The committee wasted no time in getting to work, swiftly laying down the groundwork for the upcoming leadership contest, scheduled to take place without delay.
This move comes in the wake of former leader John Rustad’s resignation, following a tumultuous period that saw him facing internal opposition from within the party. After a caucus revolt, Rustad ultimately stepped down, leading to the appointment of Trevor Halford as interim leader by a caucus vote.
As of now, no official candidates have declared their intentions to run for the leadership position vacated by Rustad in early December.
Leading the committee is Scott Lamb, a seasoned lawyer and former president of the Conservative Party of Canada. The committee also includes prominent figures such as Aisha Estey, president of the B.C. Conservatives, Skeena MLA Claire Rattee, and Don Nightengale, who served as the returning officer for the federal Conservatives’ 2021 leadership race.
