Following the restoration of power by Manitoba Hydro in Pimicikamak Cree Nation, the community in Northern Manitoba continues to face challenges in recovering.
Chief David Monias disclosed that around 140-150 individuals were evacuated on Saturday, in addition to those already displaced during the power outage. Monias highlighted that ongoing issues, such as frozen pipes, water tanks, and pumps, are causing further complications with water systems and electrical infrastructure.
Chief Monias reported that out of the 1355 houses in Cross Lake, over 200 have sustained damages, including the unfortunate loss of four homes due to fires. As the assessment of damages progresses, the community is in need of support.
Volunteers in Winnipeg have rallied together to provide assistance, seeking donations of essential items like warm clothing, hygiene products, and food. Many volunteers, including Paige Paunakis and Shaylee Beardy, have personal connections to the community and are actively involved in the relief efforts.
Chief Monias and the council are focusing on estimating repair costs and formulating a recovery strategy. Monias emphasized the necessity of approximately $44-45 million for essential repairs to aid in the community’s recovery.
