“Ice Storm Alert: Freezing Rain and Sleet to Slam GTA During Tuesday Morning Rush”

Brace for Weather Changes: Freezing Rain Warning in Effect for GTA

A warning for yellow freezing rain has been issued for parts of the Greater Toronto Area (GTA), with up to five millimetres of icy conditions expected to impact the region.

The weather system is forecasted to arrive on Tuesday, starting with light ice pellets during the morning rush hour. As the day progresses, the precipitation will transition to brief periods of freezing rain and rain along the lakeshore. However, areas in Halton and Peel regions, particularly at higher elevations, may experience more prolonged periods of freezing rain.

In elevated areas like the escarpment, there is a possibility of up to five millimetres of ice buildup. The rest of the GTA could see ice accretion ranging from one to two millimetres, potentially leading to slippery roads and walkways. Utility outages may occur in areas where ice accumulation exceeds five millimetres.

Toronto residents are advised to be cautious as a special weather statement has been released, warning of brief freezing rain in the morning before transitioning to rain as temperatures rise. With approximately 10-15 mm of rain expected on frozen ground, motorists should be aware of possible water pooling on roadways.

Later in the day, the precipitation is anticipated to change to snow, with Toronto expecting up to two centimetres of accumulation. Northern areas and cottage country could see higher snowfall amounts ranging between four to eight centimetres.
