During the recent holiday season, Operation Red Nose in Quebec saw a successful outcome for its ride-home service, despite experiencing a slight decrease in the number of rides and volunteers for its 42nd edition.
According to a report released on Monday, 17,735 volunteers provided 18,393 rides between Nov. 28 and Dec. 31 in the province. These figures showed a small decline compared to the previous year’s numbers.
Marilyn Vigneault, the executive director of Operation Red Nose, remains optimistic about the situation. She believes that the decrease in volunteers and rides may be attributed to a positive shift towards responsible behavior among the population.
Weather conditions, such as rain and freezing rain in December, also posed challenges for the organization. Despite some setbacks, there was a notable increase in rides during mid-December, especially around the weekend of Dec. 13 and 14, coinciding with many holiday parties.
Nationally, a total of 22,996 rides were provided by 21,766 volunteers. In New Brunswick, there was an increase in both the number of rides and volunteers compared to the previous year.
Operation Red Nose is set to return for the next edition, with volunteer opportunities available starting from November 2026. Vigneault emphasized the importance of having more volunteers to enhance the service’s effectiveness on the ground.
