STM Strike Stalls: Talks on Hold with No Set Date, Despite Three Key Agreements Reached

The month-long strike involving 2,400 maintenance workers at STM, Montreal’s transportation agency, is nearing its end next weekend, with negotiations yet to resume.

STM announced on Monday that their negotiation team is prepared to engage in talks, even during the upcoming holiday season. The agency highlighted over 120 meetings, six months of mediation, and 45 days of conciliation in the process so far.

The strike, which started on December 11, primarily involves workers refusing to work overtime and is scheduled to conclude on January 11 at 11:59 p.m.

By January 5, STM reported a requirement of 1,320 vehicles to maintain services, with a shortage of approximately 100 buses hindering the provision of full service.

This marks the fourth strike by the union affiliated with the CSN, following previous strikes in June, September–October, and November.

Meanwhile, STM has successfully reached agreements with three other prominent unions, including the largest one representing 4,500 bus drivers and metro operators, the second-largest for 1,300 administrative and technical staff, and most recently, the third-largest for 800 professionals linked with the FTQ.
