The Toronto Blue Jays are set to welcome Japanese infielder Kazuma Okamoto as their newest addition this Tuesday, following the recent signing of the 29-year-old to a lucrative four-year, $60-million deal.
Having made a name for himself over a decade with the Yomiuri Giants in Japan’s Nippon Professional Baseball league, Okamoto has emerged as a top slugger overseas.
During his impressive career from 2018 to 2023, Okamoto consistently hit over 30 home runs per season, achieving over 100 RBIs on two occasions. Even in a shortened 2025 season of just 77 games, the infielder boasted a remarkable batting line of .322/.411/.581, along with 15 home runs and 51 RBIs.
Noteworthy is Okamoto’s pivotal role in Japan’s victory at the 2023 World Baseball Classic, where he played a standout performance in the championship game against the United States, contributing significantly to the team’s 3-2 win in Miami with a solo home run and two runs scored.
While primarily known for his prowess at third and first base, Okamoto also brings outfield experience to the table. His addition to the Blue Jays roster raises questions about the team’s pursuit of star outfielder Kyle Tucker and the potential reunion with infielder Bo Bichette.
The Blue Jays, fresh from their first World Series appearance since 1993, are continuing their aggressive offseason spending spree. With over $350 million already committed to free agents this winter, including key signings like starting pitchers Dylan Cease and Cody Ponce, reliever Tyler Rogers, and now Okamoto, the team is showing their determination to strengthen the lineup. Additionally, starter Shane Bieber has confirmed his return for the 2025 season on a $16 million contract.
Fans can catch Okamoto alongside General Manager Ross Atkins and agent Scott Boras at a press conference in Toronto scheduled for 1 p.m. on Tuesday.
