Montreal Tragedy: Woman Dies After Being Pushed from Third-Floor Balcony

A tragic incident unfolded in Montreal’s Mercier–Hochelaga-Maisonneuve borough as a 31-year-old woman lost her life after reportedly being pushed from a third-floor balcony of an apartment building on January 1, 2026.

The Montreal Police Service (SPVM) announced on Monday that the woman passed away in the hospital due to her injuries.

“This marks the first homicide of 2026 in the Montreal region,” stated SPVM spokesperson Manuel Couture.

Law enforcement disclosed that a 31-year-old man was apprehended at the scene on Thursday following the event. He was formally charged with aggravated assault the next day.

The tragic incident occurred around 8:15 a.m. on Thursday at Sainte-Catherine Street near Jeanne-d’Arc Avenue.

Witnesses reported to the police that a dispute between the woman and the man turned violent on the third-floor balcony, resulting in the woman being pushed over the edge. She was discovered on Sainte-Catherine Street below and was rushed to the hospital in critical condition, ultimately succumbing to her injuries.
