Dozens of demonstrators have gathered outside the U.S. consulate in downtown Vancouver, demanding an end to the U.S. war on Venezuela and the repatriation of Venezuelan President Maduro and his wife, Celia Flores.
One protester expressed, “We demand Maduro’s freedom and the right for Venezuelans to determine their country’s future.”
Members of the Canada-wide Peace and Justice Network, who organized the protest, argue that the U.S. capture of Venezuela’s legitimate president violates international law and jeopardizes the nation’s independence.
Janine Solanky, a committee member of the network, warned, “The U.S.’s aggressive stance towards Venezuela sets a dangerous precedent for global peace and security.”
The arrest of Maduro has elicited varied responses from Venezuelans and international observers.
While some celebrate the news, others view it as a potential catalyst for much-needed change.
Meriely Arias, from the Venezuelan Canadian Society of BC, emphasized the depth of Venezuela’s humanitarian crisis and the need for lasting solutions.
Proponents of Maduro’s return stress the importance of upholding democratic principles, asserting their rights to choose their leaders.
Protesters are urging the Canadian government to condemn the U.S.’s actions and intervene in the situation.
