Toronto authorities have apprehended a suspect in the tragic incident that marked the city’s first homicide of 2026. The crime unfolded when a man was fatally shot on a GO Transit bus at the Yorkdale Bus Terminal during the weekend.
The incident, which occurred around 7 p.m. on Jan. 4 at the terminal near Yorkdale Road and Allen Road, prompted a swift response from law enforcement following reports of a shooting. Upon arrival, officers discovered a man on the bus with a gunshot wound.
Investigators revealed that both the victim and the alleged perpetrator had boarded the bus at the terminal shortly before the shooting took place. The suspect reportedly fired at the victim while the bus was still at the platform before fleeing the scene on foot.
Despite the officers’ efforts to save the victim’s life, he was tragically pronounced dead at the location. The victim’s identity remains undisclosed as authorities strive to inform their next of kin.
Subsequently, a suspect was apprehended shortly after the incident, and law enforcement recovered a firearm during the arrest.
Tyrel Gibson, a 40-year-old Toronto resident, was formally charged with first-degree murder by the police. Gibson made a court appearance on Monday in connection with the case.
Law enforcement has not disclosed details regarding a potential motive for the crime or any relationship between the victim and the accused.
The investigation into this incident remains active and ongoing.
