Mysterious Blaze Strikes Abandoned Surrey Church for Second Time

Firefighters responded to a blaze at a historic building in Surrey for the second time this year. The former Clayton United Church, now a heritage site, was once again the scene of a fire on Wednesday morning.

Sixteen firefighters from the Surrey Fire Service quickly contained the fire at the back of the unoccupied building on 184 Street. Luckily, there were no reported injuries, and the fire did not spread beyond the exterior.

Interestingly, this wasn’t the first time the building faced such a threat. A previous fire incident occurred on August 20, 2025, with no injuries reported then either.

Originally a church, the structure later served as the Surrey Little Theatre before becoming a private residence. Following the August fire, the owners sought a demolition permit, prompting the city’s Heritage Advisory Commission to delay a decision pending further investigation into the cause.

Despite efforts to secure the building, recent images reveal extensive damage from the fires, with the structure still fenced off and boarded up.

The road closure on 184 Street, which caused disruptions between Fraser Highway and 71 Avenue, was lifted by mid-morning.
