The Toronto Blue Jays Secure Varsho and Clement for the Coming Season
The Toronto Blue Jays have clinched deals with two key players, avoiding arbitration as they prepare for the upcoming season. Daulton Varsho has agreed to a one-year contract worth $10.75 million, while utilityman Ernie Clement has settled for a $4.6 million deal, according to a report by Sportsnet’s Ben Nicholson-Smith.
Despite Varsho’s injury setback last season, the 29-year-old showcased his prowess by hitting 20 home runs, driving in 55 runs, and maintaining a .238 batting average in just 71 games. His defensive skills in centre field also stood out, ranking 29th in MLB for outs above average.
On the other hand, Clement made a significant impact with an MLB playoff record of 30 hits and an impressive slash line of .411/.416/.562 during the post-season. With a regular season record of .277/.313/.398 along with nine home runs and 50 RBIs, Clement has proven to be a versatile asset for the Blue Jays.
As the team continues to solidify their roster, uncertainties loomed over Clement’s position following the signing of Japanese slugger Kazuma Okamoto. The addition of Okamoto at third base might prompt Clement to transition to second base or shortstop.
With Thursday’s deadline for arbitration settlement agreements approaching, the Blue Jays have also sealed a one-year deal with catcher Tyler Heineman. The team’s last remaining unsigned player is right-hander Eric Lauer.
