Emergency Teams Mobilize as Oil Spill Menaces Nanaimo Waters

An oil spill in the waters near Nanaimo, Vancouver Island has raised concerns as hundreds of liters of an unidentified substance leaked from a commercial waste disposal site. The spill, detected between Duke Point and Mudge Island, south of Nanaimo, has prompted immediate action from the British Columbia Environment and Parks Ministry.

Following a report to the B.C. government on Monday, Transport Canada’s National Aerial Surveillance aircraft conducted a flyover, estimating the spill to range between 350 and 1,600 liters. Investigators traced the source to a commercial environmental waste facility in Nanaimo, where the substance flowed into the sea through a culvert.

Efforts to contain the spill have been put in place with the installation of booms, successfully preventing further contamination beyond the immediate area. The cleanup operation is already underway, with ongoing monitoring by the ministry to ensure the situation is under control.
