A group protesting against the logging of ancient forests on Vancouver Island has vehemently denied any involvement in the suspected arson of logging equipment that occurred recently.
Sergeant Kevin Mack of Lake Cowichan RCMP mentioned that the authorities are investigating the incident at a Fraser Valley Timber site on Jan. 2, where two grapple yarders and a log loader suffered over $530,000 in damages due to fires the night before.
Despite speculations linking the protest camp’s proximity to the scene, the Walbran Valley Blockade camp asserts that their principles strictly prohibit violence and property damage. They advocate for a thorough investigation and caution against prematurely blaming forest protectors without evidence.
The group reiterates its commitment to maintaining a peaceful presence, accountability, and truth, adhering strictly to their code of conduct. While the investigation is ongoing, Sergeant Mack clarified that there is currently no direct evidence linking the protest group to the incident, except for their camp’s proximity to the site.
Authorities have not yet engaged with the occupants of the protest camp in Upper Walbran Valley. Tsawak-qin Forestry Limited Partnership and Tsawak-qin Forestry Inc. have been conducting logging activities in the ancient forest area since August 2025, with law enforcement making 15 arrests as they uphold a court injunction permitting the logging.
