A family from the Ottawa area narrowly escaped disaster when their dog unintentionally started a fire in their home on a Thursday morning.
In a heart-stopping moment captured on internal security footage, the family pet can be seen chewing on a black ski glove that contained a lithium-ion battery. As the dog moved away, the battery suddenly emitted smoke and erupted into flames, creating a dangerous situation.
Emergency responders were alerted to the fire at around 9:07 a.m. after a monitoring company detected a fire alarm at the family’s residence on Bevington Walk in Orléans. Multiple reports from passersby confirmed the presence of flames at the property.
Firefighters arrived swiftly and were able to contain the fire, which had originated from a first-storey bay window. Despite the intensity of the blaze, they managed to extinguish it before it could spread further. The family dog was safely rescued and found unharmed in the rescue operation.
Fortunately, all occupants – one adult, one child, and the pet dog – managed to escape unscathed, though they have been displaced due to the fire incident.
This serves as a cautionary tale about the potential risks associated with lithium-ion batteries. Ottawa Fire Service emphasized the importance of handling such batteries with care, as they can ignite if damaged. Residents are urged to store items containing these batteries securely, away from pets and children, and to promptly discard any damaged or malfunctioning batteries or devices.
Keyphrase: Lithium-ion battery fire.
