“Justice on the Horizon: IIO Urges Charges Against Abbotsford Officer Following 2025 Crash”

The Independent Investigations Office of British Columbia has recommended charges against a police officer following a multi-vehicle crash that left three people injured in Abbotsford almost a year ago. The incident occurred at the intersection of King Road and Gladwin Road on Feb. 20, 2025.

According to the IIO, the collision occurred while an officer, engaged in an unrelated investigation, was driving an Abbotsford Police Department vehicle and collided with a GMC Envoy SUV. The driver of the Envoy sustained injuries and was airlifted to a hospital, while both officers in the police vehicle were also hospitalized for non-life-threatening injuries.

After reviewing the evidence, Chief Civilian Director Jessica Berglund determined that there are reasonable grounds to believe that the officer may have committed driving-related offences. A report recommending charges has been forwarded to the BC Prosecution Service for consideration.

The IIO’s involvement in investigating incidents involving police-related deaths or serious injuries is standard practice, regardless of any allegations of misconduct.
