After a month-long protest, STM maintenance workers are wrapping up their overtime strike this Sunday without a resolution in sight.
Starting on December 11, the strike led to limited overtime work and sparked concerns over potential service disruptions within the transit system.
Fortunately, the STM reported that the situation didn’t escalate to the worst-case scenario. Despite facing a shortage of around 60 buses during the peak of the strike this week, it was a far cry from the potential impact on over 250 buses initially anticipated.
Both the union representing the workers and STM have agreed that the overtime strike will conclude as scheduled on Sunday, but negotiations remain at a standstill.
While the STM expressed its ongoing commitment to finding a resolution, citing successful recent agreements with other employee groups, talks with the maintenance union have not progressed. The transit agency stated that their negotiation team has been ready for discussions, even over the holiday season, but no new meeting date has been set yet.
On the other hand, the union indicated that discussions have hit a roadblock, hinting at potential future pressure tactics if talks continue to stall.
