The Quebec Liberal Party Gears Up for Leadership Race
The race for the leadership of the Quebec Liberal Party (PLQ) kicks off on Monday as the party seeks a successor to the departing Pablo Rodriguez, amid recent party turmoil. Experts suggest the PLQ is in need of a “savior” to navigate through its challenges.
Charles Milliard, former head of the Quebec Federation of Chambers of Commerce, has thrown his hat into the ring after finishing second to Rodriguez in the previous leadership race. Farmer Mario Roy is also eyeing a second term bid.
Prospective candidates have until Feb. 13 at 5 p.m. to declare their intent to run. The new Liberal leader will be selected at a party convention scheduled for March 14.
To uphold transparency in the leadership race, the PLQ has appointed a “compliance and ethics officer” to ensure adherence to electoral regulations, especially concerning financing.
Political science experts emphasize the urgency of the race, emphasizing that the next leader will face a fast-paced and resource-limited environment, distinct from previous contests.
The PLQ faced significant challenges during the fall parliamentary session, leading to Rodriguez’s resignation in December following allegations of illegal fundraising practices.
As the party aims to distance itself from corruption scandals, potential candidates like Yves Desjardins-Siciliano and Guy Cormier are being considered to restore credibility and trust.
With the upcoming provincial election, the new leader must rejuvenate the party’s image and focus on economic issues. Mobilizing support, especially in uncharted territories like western Montreal, will be crucial for the PLQ’s success.
