Federal officials have recently announced a significant investment of $9.47 million into Rouge National Urban Park, located at the southern end bordering Scarborough and Pickering. This funding will be used for a series of enhancements within the park to improve its infrastructure and overall visitor experience.
Among the planned improvements, the project will include the construction of elevated boardwalks and bridges aimed at protecting the park’s wetlands while also providing safer access to the beach and marsh areas. Additionally, a new visitor education center is in the works to further enrich the park experience for visitors.
However, as a result of ongoing construction activities and safety concerns, access to the area off Lawrence Avenue East will be restricted to the public until the completion of the project in 2027. Parks Canada assures visitors that while this may be inconvenient, it is necessary to ensure the safety of all individuals until the work is finished.
Rouge National Urban Park spans approximately 79 square kilometers and boasts a diverse ecosystem that is home to over 2,000 plant and animal species, making it a vital area for conservation and recreation.
