Dozens Evacuated After Arson Blaze in Montreal
A devastating arson fire in Montreal overnight Sunday led to the evacuation of numerous residents. The incident, which occurred on Sherbrooke Street East near Lyall Street, unfolded in a mixed residential and commercial building. The structure, spanning three stories with shops on the ground floor and apartments above, became engulfed in flames around 3 a.m. Monday.
The Montreal Fire Department sprang into action and escalated efforts by issuing a third alarm to combat the blaze. Approximately 40 individuals were safely evacuated, with only one person requiring medical treatment for smoke inhalation.
Preliminary investigations by the Montreal Police revealed suspicions of arson at the site. Constable Johany Charland of the SPVM mentioned the discovery of incendiary materials, indicating a potential criminal act. Witnesses also reported seeing a suspect fleeing the scene by car post-incident.
The arson unit of the SPVM has taken charge of the investigation, although no arrests have been made as of yet.
