Three men are currently on trial for the tragic deaths of a couple in Abbotsford, B.C., allegedly motivated by financial issues. The prosecution claims that Gurkaran Singh, a recent arrival in Canada, along with co-accused Abhijeet Singh and Khushveer Singh Toor, are responsible for the deaths of Arnold and Joanne De Jong.
According to Crown prosecutor Dorothy Tsui, the suspects’ alleged motives include debt, financial strain, and greed. Gurkaran Singh, who had just arrived on a student visa, was linked to the victims through Abhijeet Singh’s cleaning company, which had worked at the couple’s home previously.
The De Jongs were found dead in their home, with evidence suggesting they were robbed of valuables including credit cards, cheques, and a pressure washer. The suspects allegedly fled British Columbia after the murders but were later apprehended in Surrey.
During the trial at the B.C. Supreme Court, Tsui plans to present a significant amount of circumstantial evidence linking the accused to the crime, including financial transactions, fingerprints, and DNA evidence. The trial is expected to last 40 days with numerous witnesses set to testify.
