‘Dances with Wolves’ Star Nathan Chasing Horse Faces Trial in Las Vegas for Serious Charges

The upcoming trial of Nathan Chasing Horse, the actor known for his role in “Dances with Wolves” who faces accusations of sexually abusing Indigenous women and girls, is set to commence in Las Vegas on Tuesday. Chasing Horse, who has denied the charges against him, is accused of exploiting his position as a spiritual leader and healer to prey on victims over a span of two decades.

The allegations against Chasing Horse, which include sexual assault, kidnapping, and involvement in producing pornography, have raised widespread concern within Indigenous communities. The case, which caused shockwaves across Indian Country following his arrest and indictment in early 2023, has been marred by delays and setbacks but is now moving forward to trial after new accusations emerged.

Renowned for his role as Smiles A Lot in the iconic movie “Dances with Wolves,” Chasing Horse hails from the Rosebud Reservation in South Dakota, home to the Sicangu Sioux tribe of the Lakota nation. Following his on-screen success, Chasing Horse purportedly assumed the role of a Lakota medicine man, leading a group known as The Circle, where followers believed in his ability to communicate with spirits.

According to prosecutors, Chasing Horse exploited his influence to manipulate victims, including a 14-year-old girl whom he allegedly coerced into sexual acts under the guise of spiritual healing. The trial, expected to last four weeks with 18 witnesses lined up by the prosecution, sheds light on the challenges of addressing violence committed by individuals within Native communities.

Crystal Lee, CEO of United Natives, an organization aiding victims of sexual abuse, emphasized the importance of addressing the issue of Native perpetrators and holding them accountable. As the trial unfolds, it prompts critical conversations on ensuring justice for victims and preventing such abuses from recurring.
