Federal Funding Boost to Combat Rising Extortion Crisis in Southern Ontario

The Peel Regional Police to Receive $1 Million Boost to Combat Extortion and Support Victims

The federal government has announced its commitment to providing up to $1 million to bolster Peel Regional Police’s initiatives in combating extortion, aiding victims, and expanding the scope of a specialized task force.

Serving the cities of Brampton and Mississauga in Ontario, the police service established the Extortion Investigative Task Force in 2023 following threats targeting members of the South Asian business community.

According to Ottawa, criminal networks leverage intimidation tactics and threats to finance and wield influence over illicit markets involving drugs, vehicles, and firearms.

Additionally, the federal government is initiating the creation of a Regional Integrated Drug Enforcement Team in collaboration with Ontario and local authorities, with a financial backing of $4 million over a span of four years.

This enforcement team aims to amalgamate law enforcement resources from various agencies and regions to disrupt organized crime factions controlling the illegal drug trade and facilitating extortion.
