A man in Peterborough found himself in hot water as he attempted to deceive authorities by using fake paper license plates on his vehicle. The 45-year-old driver was stopped by Traffic Services officers in the Romaine Street and Park Street area on Jan. 10. The suspicious officers discovered that the license plate on the vehicle belonged to an entirely different car in Mississauga.
Upon closer inspection, it was revealed that the plates were not genuine at all. The driver had ingeniously crafted homemade paper plates, encased them in a plastic sleeve, and affixed them to his vehicle using packing tape.
As a result of his actions, the driver now faces multiple charges, including using unauthorized plates on the vehicle, failing to comply with the regulations regarding license plates, neglecting to obtain a permit as an owner, and driving without insurance.
The man has been scheduled to appear in court on March 23, 2026, to address the charges brought against him. Police emphasized that regardless of the craftsmanship of the counterfeit plates, such improvised solutions do not meet the legal standards set by Ontario.
