Halton police have issued a warning about a troubling rise in distraction thefts aimed at seniors in the Halton Region and Greater Toronto Area.
Over the past few months leading into the current year, there has been a noticeable increase in these theft incidents within the Halton Region.
Per official reports, the suspects engage elderly individuals in public settings under false pretenses, like asking for directions or seeking help for a supposed sick family member. Once the victim’s attention is diverted, the suspect may offer a hug or place inexpensive jewelry on them as a supposed gift, all while discreetly removing the victim’s valuable jewelry.
According to Halton police, these thefts commonly occur when seniors are out walking or standing roadside, with female suspects often approaching from a vehicle to engage with the victims.
Authorities have provided some important advice to help seniors avoid falling prey to distraction thefts.
