Quebec Unveils Bold New Electoral Map: Major Changes Announced by Commission

The upcoming Oct. 5 elections in Quebec will see a shift in the electoral map, with changes impacting various regions. The Quebec Electoral Representation Commission (CRE) unveiled the new map aiming to better represent the evolving voter numbers across the territory.

One notable change is the consolidation of ridings in Gaspésie and Montreal, creating two new ridings in Laurentides-Lanaudière and Centre-du-Québec respectively. The Gaspé Peninsula will now have the combined Gaspé-Bonaventure riding, and the Matane-Matapédia riding will expand to include La Haute-Gaspésie Regional County Municipality.

In Montreal, the LaFontaine riding will be split into Pointe-aux-Trembles and Anjou-Louis-Riel, resulting in the creation of Pointe-aux-Prairies and Anjou-LaFontaine ridings.

However, these changes have not been without controversy. The decision to remove a constituency in Gaspésie has faced opposition, with concerns raised about the region losing political influence. Despite attempts to halt the revision of the electoral map, legal challenges have led the process to continue.

The new electoral map also introduces a Bellefeuille riding in the Laurentians and Lanaudière area and a Marie-Lacoste-Gérin-Lajoie riding in Estrie and Centre-du-Québec. In total, 51 of Quebec’s 125 electoral districts are being modified to address population shifts and ensure fair representation.
