In a recent phone scam incident, an elderly Toronto resident fell victim to a fraudulent scheme, losing around $4,000. The perpetrators posed as a credit investigator and a ride-share pickup driver in this elaborate con.
The unfortunate event took place on Dec. 29, 2025, when the victim received a call from an imposter claiming to be a credit investigator. The fake investigator convinced the victim that their credit card was compromised and instructed them to destroy the card to prevent further fraud. Subsequently, a supposed ride-share courier arrived to collect the destroyed card for “verification.”
Following the pickup, unauthorized transactions amounting to $4,000 were discovered by the victim. Authorities suspect the involvement of two individuals in this deceitful operation.
The first suspect is described as a clean-shaven male aged 25 to 35, sporting a light mustache, and was last seen wearing distinctive attire including a black Nike toque, a red #7 Morocco soccer jersey, black pants, and a black zip-up sweater. The second suspect was wearing a green jacket with the hood up, although a detailed physical description is unavailable.
The suspects were reportedly seen driving a black BMW X5, model years 2019–2023, with four doors. Images of the suspects and the vehicle have been publicly shared as part of the investigation.
Toronto police are advising residents, especially seniors, to remain vigilant as scammers are employing various tactics such as using ride-share services and couriers to perpetrate fraudulent activities. Stay alert and cautious to avoid falling victim to such scams.
