A heavy snowstorm sweeping through the province has caused chaos on highways in the Greater Toronto and Hamilton Area, with Ontario Provincial Police responding to about 200 crashes and 125 vehicles sliding into ditches. The collisions surged following the onset of snowfall, with much of southern Ontario still under a snowfall warning.
OPP Sgt. Kerry Schmidt, stationed near Highway 401 and Highway 400, captured a two-vehicle crash on video, illustrating vehicles colliding and ricocheting off walls amid treacherous driving conditions. Urging caution, Schmidt emphasized the need to adapt driving to the current challenging circumstances.
During the storm, Schmidt advised drivers to disable traction control if stuck in snow and emphasized the importance of slowing down and focusing on safe navigation. He encouraged motorists to stay off the roads unless absolutely necessary and to give ample space to snowplows for effective snow clearance.
Despite lighter traffic volumes than usual, cameras from the Ontario Ministry of Transportation revealed ongoing snow-covered lanes on major routes like Highway 400. The Don Valley Parkway in Toronto experienced temporary closures but has since reopened, while other road closures were observed, including the southbound lanes of Highway 400 and certain off-ramps at the Hamilton-Burlington border.
For commuters relying on GO Transit, service disruptions were reported due to weather and mechanical issues, affecting the Lakeshore East, Lakeshore West, and Stouffville train lines.
