Manslaughter Charges Loom After Fatal Balcony Push in Montreal

A man in Montreal, originally charged with aggravated assault after a woman was reportedly pushed to her death from a third-floor balcony, will now face a manslaughter charge.

James Theramene from Laval was arrested following the New Year’s Day tragedy involving Tadjan’ah Desir.

Expected in court on Thursday, Theramene is set to have his charge elevated to manslaughter according to Quebec’s Director of Criminal and Penal Prosecutions.

Desir passed away in a hospital after an alleged altercation that led to her falling from the apartment in Mercier–Hochelaga-Maisonneuve, as reported by a witness to the police.

The SPVM has labeled this incident as Montreal’s first murder of 2026.

Theramene was apprehended at the scene, and it’s important to note that the accusation against him has yet to be proven in court.

An organization fighting against domestic violence has revealed that both the accused and the victim, each 31 years old, were former partners.
