Laval to Close Centre de la Nature Farm Amid Budget Changes
Laval city officials have confirmed the permanent closure of the Centre de la Nature farm in Saint-Vincent-de-Paul this year as part of the municipality’s 2026 budget restructuring. The aging facility, home to farm animals for public interactions, would require significant financial investment to meet modern standards. The city prioritizes essential services and infrastructure maintenance over the farm, and plans are underway to relocate the animals safely.
Mayor Stéphane Boyer acknowledged the disappointment surrounding the closure, citing the aging animals and outdated facilities as key factors. Despite the closure, efforts are being made to explore alternative educational initiatives and partnerships while ensuring animal welfare remains a top priority.
Former farm employee Naomi Panetta expressed her shock and disappointment at the lack of public consultation and highlighted the farm’s educational value as a unique and accessible attraction, especially for children unfamiliar with farm life.
A petition to save the farm has garnered significant support, with over 18,500 signatures urging the city to reconsider the closure and invest in renovations. City councillor Isabelle Piché and community advocates are calling for public consultation to gauge community input before finalizing the farm’s fate.
