A fire that billowed black smoke over Burnaby’s downtown area on Tuesday morning has been successfully contained by Burnaby crews.
The Burnaby Fire Department responded to a commercial building on Lozells Avenue near Winston Street following reports from workers about a piece of machinery causing the blaze. Deputy Fire Chief Ian Hetherington explained that the fire stemmed from a heat exchanger-related mechanical issue within the building.
Although fire crews remained at the scene past noon on Tuesday, Hetherington assured that the fire had been put out and the risk of it spreading was minimal. Fortunately, no injuries were reported in connection with the incident.
The Metro Vancouver Regional District confirmed its awareness of the fire and informed that it was monitoring the local air quality. An online map maintained by the district tracks the Air Quality Health Index across the region, with no alerts issued due to the fire.
