Lawyer Raises Alarm as Surrey Extortion Victims Take Justice Into Their Own Hands

In response to a recent incident, there are growing concerns that retaliatory actions, known as ‘return fire,’ may escalate as residents encounter extortion threats in the south Fraser River area.

Over the weekend, the Surrey Police Service (SPS) initiated an investigation into a home that was targeted by gunfire linked to extortion. By Monday, a second investigation was opened to determine if the occupants of the home had fired back at the assailants. Fortunately, there were no injuries, and no suspects have been apprehended in what authorities have described as a reckless event.

Vancouver criminal lawyer Michael Shapray expressed his lack of surprise at the unfolding events, citing heightened tensions among the public due to perceived inadequate responses from law enforcement and the government.

Shapray cautioned against individuals resorting to armed retaliation, emphasizing that such actions could lead to serious legal ramifications, including firearms charges and assault allegations.

As the investigations continue, Shapray emphasized the complexities of the situation, highlighting the potential legal consequences of engaging in retaliatory gunfire.

The ongoing situations in Surrey, Delta, and Abbotsford involving extortion attempts and gunfire incidents underscore the pressing need for law enforcement to swiftly address these issues and bring a resolution to the community’s anxieties.
