CAQ Shakeup: Finance Minister Eric Girard Bows Out of Leadership Race

Finance Minister Eric Girard has announced that he will not be running for the leadership of the Coalition Avenir Québec (CAQ) to succeed François Legault. Instead, he is focusing on seeking a third term in October.

During a press conference held at the National Assembly on Wednesday morning, Girard clarified that he did not see a viable path for winning the leadership race. He emphasized his intention to stay neutral throughout the process and collaborate with whoever assumes leadership of the party.

Girard highlighted the importance of key party values such as nationalism, which he aims to make more inclusive and unifying, and the economy. He stressed the significance of maintaining a “third way” for the party’s evolution.

Despite his decision to forgo the leadership bid, Girard confirmed his plans to run again in the Groulx riding, where he was previously elected in 2018 and 2022.

Meanwhile, Justice Minister Simon Jolin-Barrette and Environment Minister Bernard Drainville, both serving in the Legault government, are still contemplating whether to enter the leadership race. Drainville stressed the need for experience and unity among Quebecers to address challenges collaboratively with other provinces.

Jolin-Barrette, receiving support from colleagues like former minister Suzanne Roy and Minister of Transport Jonatan Julien, expressed serious consideration of entering the race. He highlighted the significance of support from fellow CAQ members and emphasized the party’s teamwork and the “third way” approach.

Another potential candidate, Minister of the Economy Christine Fréchette, is also weighing her options. Fréchette has received backing from ministers Mathieu Lacombe, Benoît Charrette, and Gilles Bélanger as she evaluates her next steps.
