Major Shutdown: Metro Vancouver’s Key Bridges Closed for One Week, Impacting Thousands

If you frequently travel to or from Surrey and rely on the Pattullo or stal̕əw̓asəm bridges, it’s time to plan for a different route.

The BC government has confirmed that both bridges will be closed for approximately one week in early February. The exact date is yet to be announced, and the closure duration may vary depending on weather conditions.

The closure is necessary for crews to connect the roadways on both sides to the new Riverview Bridge. Originally scheduled for completion in January, the work has been postponed.

During the closure, commuters can anticipate increased traffic and potential delays on the Port Mann and Alex Fraser bridges, which are likely to be used as alternative routes.

The Riverview Bridge, once finished, will feature modern, wider lanes with a center median barrier, as well as expanded walking and cycling paths in both directions. The government has also pledged enhanced connections and upgrades to the existing road networks for commuters from New Westminster and Surrey.

Once all four lanes are operational, the new bridge will once again link King George Boulevard in Surrey and McBride Boulevard in New Westminster, with the off-ramp to Columbia Street reopening as well.

According to the province’s website, the opening of the new Royal Avenue on-ramp, Columbia Street loop-ramp, and Highway 17 off-ramp will be staggered to allow for the completion of connecting roadways and the dismantling of the Pattullo Bridge.

Significant progress on the new bridge is contingent upon the removal of the old structure, a process expected to span at least two years, causing potential disruptions.

The total project cost is estimated to be $1.637 billion.
