Mercier-Hochelaga-Maisonneuve Borough Shifts to Weekly Trash Collection in Summer
Mercier-Hochelaga-Maisonneuve Borough recently announced a significant change in its waste collection schedule that will impact residents during the summer months. Starting May 1 and continuing through Oct. 31, the borough will transition from its current biweekly trash pickup to a weekly schedule.
This decision, as stated in a press release, aims to enhance the cleanliness of the borough and fulfill a campaign promise made by Mayor Chantal Gagnon. Gagnon emphasized the importance of providing residents with a clean and inviting environment, reaffirming the administration’s dedication to this goal.
The move to a biweekly garbage collection system in November 2024 faced backlash from residents and community groups, who voiced concerns over increased litter in the streets. This feedback prompted a reevaluation of the schedule, ultimately resulting in the return to a weekly pickup routine during the summer months.
In addition to the revised collection frequency, the borough is also encouraging residents to actively participate in food waste collection programs and adopt sustainable waste reduction practices to minimize landfill waste. The borough plans to share detailed collection schedules to facilitate community engagement and cooperation.
