Quebec Braces for Record Cold Snap, Urged to Conserve Energy
As Quebec gears up for a frigid weekend and the start of next week, Hydro-Québec is on high alert for surging electricity demand. The utility is anticipating consumption levels to hover around or even surpass 40,000 megawatts, topping the previous peak of 39,000 megawatts recorded on Jan. 5.
To combat potential grid overloads, Hydro-Québec is appealing to residents to adopt simple energy-saving practices. These measures include dialing down home heating by a degree or two, utilizing hot water during off-peak hours (6 a.m.–10 a.m. and 4 p.m.–8 p.m.), charging electric vehicles overnight, and operating energy-hungry appliances outside of peak periods. Additionally, sealing up drafts in homes can contribute significantly to energy efficiency.
The peak electricity demand is projected to occur from early Sunday until Wednesday morning. Citizens are urged to play their part in maintaining grid stability amidst the impending cold spell.
