“Quebec’s Riveting New Drama ‘Gagne ton ciel’ Hits Theaters This Week!”

A gripping new Quebec film, inspired by true events, is making its debut in theaters throughout the province this week. “Gagne ton ciel,” directed by the talented filmmaker Mathieu Denis, is set to premiere on Jan. 23.

Describing the film as a blend of thriller and social drama, Mathieu Denis shared, “There are thriller elements to it, but it’s also a social drama, and that’s not the easiest kind of film to finance.”

Starring Samir Guesmi as Nacer, an engineer from Montreal whose life takes a dark turn due to financial strain, the film delves into the complexities of societal pressures and the impact of economic instability. The storyline was crafted as a response to the often biased reactions towards socio-economic challenges.

Loosely based on a true story involving a Montreal engineer’s arrest following an attempted kidnapping, “Gagne ton ciel” sheds light on the harsh realities faced by individuals in such circumstances.

Samir Guesmi, who plays Nacer in the film, emphasized, “It’s not very important where you come from. I think the most important thing is what you do right now, here and now.”

Director Mathieu Denis highlighted the film’s relevance in today’s context, addressing issues such as identity, societal pressures, and moral dilemmas. He expressed concern over the negative direction of conversations surrounding immigration and aims to spark meaningful dialogue through the film.

“Gagne ton ciel” has already garnered attention, premiering at TIFF, featuring at CINEMANIA, and securing the title of Best French-Language Feature at Cinéfest Sudbury.
